無論什麼背景文化，笑容是串接起彼此的橋樑。
說到笑的英文，你或許會想到smile，也可能想到laugh，
你有想過他們之間有什麼不一樣嗎？
他們又有什麼特殊的用法嗎？

smile和laugh有什麼不同？
首先，smile和laugh雖然都被翻譯為「笑」，
但兩者在變化形上有一些不同。
smile既是動詞（笑）又是名詞（笑容），
laugh是動詞（笑），也可以是可數名詞（笑），
但laugh還有一個變化形laughter，也是名詞，
但laughter不可數，是更抽象一點的「笑聲」。
【例句】She smiled faintly and said nothing.
【例句】He is a fun guy, always making me laugh.
【例句】I could hear suppressed laughter coming from his room.
除了變化形外，在意義上面smile和laugh也有些微差異。
通常smile是在表達某種滿足感、友善之意，
你可以想像成smile是一種臉上的表情；
而laugh多半是被某些有趣、意料之外的事情逗笑，
多半會是指有發出聲響、笑聲的舉動。
舉例來說，
像是今天出門天氣很好，天空很藍，於是你會smile；
晚上你去聽了一場單口相聲，梗很對你的胃，你就會laugh。

先從smile當作名詞形態學起。
faint/thin smile 淡笑
broad/wide smile 大大的笑
sheepish smile 害羞地笑
plastic smile 假笑
wry smile 苦笑
【例句】Hearing his hurtful words, she gave a sad and wry smile.
【例句】All of a sudden, I hated the plastic smile which I thought was warm before.
be all smiles
當一個人全部都是微笑的時候，
就代表「笑容洋溢、滿面春風」。
【例句】She was all smiles when she met the boy she liked on the street.
sb’s smile broadens
笑容越來越寬廣，
也就是笑的幅度越來越大的意思。
【例句】His smile broadened when we started to sing the birthday song for him.
wipe the smile off one’s face
wipe off意思是擦除、去除，
wipe the smile off one’s face則是將笑容從某人的臉上去除，
你也可以很口語的翻成「讓某人笑不出來」。
【例句】The rumor about her boyfriend dating another woman wiped the smile off her face.
接下來介紹幾個smile當動詞的片語：
smile from ear to ear
笑的範圍從一隻耳朵到另一隻耳朵，
意思就是笑得合不攏嘴。
【例句】Upon hearing the good news from his teacher, he smiled from ear to ear.
fortune smiles on sb
smile on 的意思是垂青，
fortune smiles on sb可以翻成「命運對⋯⋯微笑」，
也就是某人特別的幸運或成功。
【例句】After overcoming countless difficulties, he knew that fortune started to smile on him.
laugh 笑(v.) 笑聲(n.)
我們首先從laugh當作名詞時學起。
light/little/slight/short/small laugh 輕笑
big/good/great laugh 大笑
loud laugh放聲大笑 <-> low laugh 低笑
booming laugh 興高采烈地笑
forced laugh 強笑、假笑
【例句】She gave forced laugh and glanced towards her husband.
I could use a laugh.
I could do with a laugh.
兩句話都相當口語，
意思是「說點什麼讓我開心一下」。
【例句】Tell me more about him. I could do with a laugh.
have the last laugh
擁有最後的笑，意思是「取得最後的勝利」，
你可以想像中文的「笑到最後的人」，是不是很具體？
【例句】When the Information Revolution comes, it's hard to say who could have the last laugh.
get/draw a laugh
get a laugh是比較偏美式用法，
draw a laugh則是比較英式用法，
意思都是「引人發笑」。
【例句】I finally realized I am a terrible comedian at the moment that my jokes got little laughs.
接下來是laugh當動詞的一些用法。
laugh one’s head off
one’s可以隨意替換成my, your等等，
片語的意思是「笑到瘋掉、笑翻了」。
【例句】When I heard his story of the day, I can’t help but laugh my head off.
not know whether to laugh or cry
其實依照字面翻譯，你完成可以知道這句意思是：
「不知道該哭還是笑、不知如何是好」，
除了哭笑不得的無奈外，也可以是不知道當下如何反應。
【例句】When my ex-boyfriend told me they were getting married I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
try not to laugh
try not to laugh可以是為了不失禮而忍笑，
也可以很單純是「試著不要笑」，
你可以在 YouTube搜尋“try not to laugh challenge”，
會發現有很多趣味影片的合集。
